Clenching and grinding (bruxism) can place severe stress on teeth and supporting tissues. The average woman chews with 70 to 90 pounds per square inch of pressure. A man chews with 90 to 110 pounds per square inch. Clenching has been measured at up to 100 pounds per square inch.
Excessive forces cause the teeth to wear and the bone and gums to break down. This accelerates periodontal disease and tooth loss, and causes headaches (especially upon arising), loose teeth, and sometimes even the inability to keep the mouth open.
We can create custom mouth guards that minimize, protect, and redirect these forces from their destructive paths. It is important to have an appliance customized for your particular condition. And remember, that same force is even more destructive if you or your child plays sports--a customized athletic mouth guard is a must for all contact-sport athletes.
